If you’ve followed along for a while, you know that I believe interiors should be beautiful, comfortable, and easy to live in, and the bedroom is no exception. Today I’ll be sharing four easy steps to style your bed like an interior designer, so it looks great, feels great, and it’s easy to maintain.
The better quality the sheets, the softer they are, and the better they wear. Selecting 100% cotton will allow you to sleep better because they breathe so you will not feel too hot. With cotton sheets with a high thread count, the more you wash them, the softer they get. Purchase a full set that includes a fitted sheet, top sheet, and pillowcases to create a great starting point for styling your bed.
A good quality down duvet not only looks great layered on the bed, but it also feels amazingly indulgent to climb into at the end of a long day. Again, getting a good quality one with a cotton shell and down (or down alternative) fill will ensure that you don’t overheat at night because it’s breathable. When shopping for a down duvet, please do look for companies that use ethically sourced down feathers. Opting for a duvet that is a lighter weight for all-season is a good idea too, some of the thicker weights can be very warm. Place your luxurious duvet into a crisp cotton duvet cover for the ultimate sleeping experience. Oh, and purchase the coordinating shams to cover your pillows to complete the look.
As you see in the photo above, I like to start at the back using large 26×26 euro pillows. If you have a king-size bed, use three euro pillows; if you have a queen or full-size bed, use two euro pillows. Next, I like to layer in the pillows that are in the sham covers that match your duvet set, and then the pillows that you sleep on that are in the covers that match your sheet set. Be sure to use king size pillow inserts if you have a king-size bed because they’re larger and fill the space better. I also recommend upgrading all of your pillows so that they all have similar fullness and sit pretty when fluffed up. Lastly, I recommend either one long lumbar pillow or two smaller lumbar pillows to sit in front. Having only one or two pillows in front means it’s easy to remove them when you want to sleep and place them back on in the morning when you’re making your bed.
The last step to styling your bed is to add a bit of colour (or contrast if you’re not using colour) and texture to the bottom of the bed by incorporating a throw blanket. You can either toss it on the corner, as I’ve done in the photo above, or you can lay it flat across the whole bed. Adding this last extra detail ties the whole look together as long as you use the same colours you’ve used in the decorative pillows.
